Topic of the month – October 2016

Posted on: September 30, 2016

This month’s topic is ‘Ignorance’, which seems to be the dominant mode of thought we are adopting as a species at the moment.  It distresses me greatly that expert knowledge in something is currently treated with suspicion, and people act as if opinion is as valid as research and thought.  It’s especially prevalent in relation to the environment and climate change. I love that saying ‘You’re entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts’.  Maybe if we all got t-shirts with that as a slogan, we could save the world (okay, it’s a longshot).

Next month’s TOTM will be ‘Journey’.

Every month this website will feature ten to twenty Horacek cartoons on a chosen topic. I chose them alphabetically. All cartoons are ©Judy Horacek. I’d rather you didn’t use these cartoons without my permission, but if you must, I’d appreciate it if you acknowledge my authorship and the source.  They are cartoons, not memes.  Cartoons this month were first published in The Age, The Canberra Times, The Australian Magazine and for various commissions.

That ‘laugh and cry’ thing is one of the reasons I love the medium of cartooning so much. And it’s so necessary in these contemporary times (maybe it is always). Thanks for the compliments, warmest, Judy

Yes, the Kakadu one resonated across in NZ as we have a government giving out mining permits in national sanctuaries and marine reserves and areas fraught with quakes and volcanoes.

How about “You’re entitled to your own opinion – I’m entitled to my ignorance of it”.

That could work. Maybe a good bumper sticker?

I’ll think of you on your trek from now on when I do a zebra cartoon. I’ve done quite a lot of them already – not sure if it’s that there’s something inherently funny about zebras or just that I love stripes. Hope you are well, warmest, Judy x
