Topic of the Month – May 2017

Posted on: April 30, 2017

This month’s topic is ‘Ocean’.   The extraordinary, mysterious ocean – source of all life and lots of play.  Whether playing a starring role in a cartoon, or simply there as a backdrop, you can’t beat the ocean.

Next month’s TOTM will begin with ‘P’.  That’s all I know, so that’s all I’m saying.

Every month this website will feature ten to twenty Horacek cartoons on a chosen topic. I chose them alphabetically. All cartoons are ©Judy Horacek. I’d rather you didn’t use these cartoons without my permission, but if you must, I’d appreciate it if you acknowledge my authorship and the source.  They are cartoons, not memes. Cartoons this month were first published in The Age, The Canberra Times, The Australian Magazine and for various commissions.  Some were done simply for my own pleasure, and had their first place of publication in one of my cartoon collections.

Hey Judy, does that “I had a lovely barrier reef…” one go to the tune of Melanie’s “Alexander Beetle”?

Yes it does! At least I think it’s the same song – I’ve never called it Melanie’s, it’s always been plain Alexander Beetle to me.

Ha ha, if we’re talking age, I think I knew the song pre-Melanie!

A badly photocopied version of fin de shark was pinned to my many work boards for over twenty years – kept me grounded through my adoration of Judith Butler. Thank you for your amazing talent and generosity in sharing this work through your newsletters.

You’re welcome Nicole. My cartoon and Judith Butler – who could ask for anything more?

Thank you, Judy for this week’s topic. Love your work.

So very much topical with what is going on with Adani in Queensland! Wish the decision makers in this country would see your cartoons and consider the long-term impact of their short-termed decisions.

Looking forward to next month already :) Conny

Thanks Conny. I can’t believe the whole Adani thing – leaving aside the environmental disastrousness of it, it doesn’t even stack up in terms of making money. So not only shortsighted, also plain stupid. Hope you have a great month.

Hi Judy, ‘Ocean’ is another great Topic of the month and I especially liked ‘Woman with Latitude / Woman with Longitude’. In 2011 I made a number of sculptures of female torsos including ‘Woman with Latitude’ and ‘Woman with Longitude’. The latter is now in the permanent collection of the Gippsland Art Gallery.
