Topic of the Month – March 2019

Posted on: February 28, 2019

This month’s topic is Greed. There’s a lot of it about.  The chocolate and cake kind of greed I’m not really in a position to criticize, but the rest of it – the rapacious nature of corporations, the destruction of our planet in pursuit of profit, the unethical and immoral behaviour of banks leading people into debts they can’t afford, all of that makes me very mad. And we are all implicated, especially those of us in the western world, taking far more than our far share of a finite planet. (Okay after that little rant, I will definitely be more critical of my chocolate consumption).

Every month this website will feature twenty or so Horacek cartoons on a chosen topic. I choose them alphabetically. All cartoons are ©Judy Horacek. I’d rather you didn’t use these cartoons without my permission, but if you must, I’d appreciate it if you acknowledge my authorship and the source.  They are cartoons, not memes! Cartoons this month were first published in The Age, The Australian, The Canberra Times and ‘Curbin the Urban’, a community cartoon project I did in Princes Hill (last century!)

Next month’s topic will start with H.

I bought a fridge magnet of Woman with Altitude in ?1997 when I first became an external off-campus undergraduate mature age student (I eventually graduated in 2011 with a PhD but it was a really really tough time…). Now, I’m reclaiming MY life as an even more mature age single woman, Woman with Altitude is back on the top left corner of MY fridge in MY newly renovated kitchen. I sent a Woman with Altitude image to a friend who’d sent me a photo of herself on top of a mountain in Capetown recently (she also loved it). She’s a great promoter of women in science…
    Thanks.

Thanks for the story Dr Ruth. Proud to hear that Woman with Altitude has been part of your life marking your very significant occasions over such a long time. She was quite new in 1997 (we all were newer then…). Women in science and women who climb mountains and women who have newly independent lives rock!

    Hi Judy
The Changing Face of Capitalism: one of my favourites; so incisive and politically truthful. Thank you
