Topic of the Month – June

Posted on: May 31, 2018

This month’s topic is ‘Zebras and Giraffes’, which is fitting because June 5 is World Environment Day, a reminder of how important conservation is.  Although to be honest, this topic has come about because zebras and giraffes are such extraordinary looking creatures, that they are irresistible as cartoon subjects.

With next month’s topic we are back at ‘A’ again – it’s amazing how quickly those alphabets fly by.

Every month this website will feature twenty or so Horacek cartoons on a chosen topic. I choose them alphabetically. All cartoons are ©Judy Horacek. I’d rather you didn’t use these cartoons without my permission, but if you must, I’d appreciate it if you acknowledge my authorship and the source.  They are cartoons, not memes! Cartoons this month were first published in the newspaper The Age and in the Australian Magazine.

Thank you so much for a really good laugh! I especially enjoyed the window blinds and the fan.

Thanks Bea. The fan was an unexpected pleasure – when I first thought of it, it seemed a dumbish idea but when I drew it, it made me laugh. Hope you mountain Horaceks are all keeping well.

Do not disabuse me of the notion those are Cairn terriers aboard your Ark. I have a beloved one who’s had two strokes and is still with me at age almost 16…he has been so loyal (yet independent) all his dear sweet, optimistic wee life.
Love your work especially the drycleaned zebra…real laughter is so good for the soul.
    Appreciate you so much

Of course there are Cairn terriers aboard my Ark. They are in charge of the Twitter account. Glad you got some laughs, thanks for letting me know. Appreciation is always welcome. Give your pup some pats from me.

Yes, I second the commenter above (or below after I post this or downundah? or . . . ), about laughing out loud. I was smiling and chuckling along, then got to the giraffe ceiling fan and laughed right out loud (LROL!) I was even almost rolling around on the floor laughing right out loud (ROFLROL!) Thank you so much, Judy for these monthly cartoons. They bring some much-needed levity to the world. -Theresa “T” Koenke Diaz, Boulder, CO, USA

Thanks T, delighted to have your continued interest from Boulder, Colorado! I nearly didn’t draw the ceiling fan one because i wasn’t sure about the idea, but when I drew it and saw the expressions on the giraffe and the woman’s faces, I knew it was a good’un. Thanks for letting me know about your LROLs.

Hi Lorena, glad you enjoyed the cartoons. You can’t really buy them at the shops – you can get some of them on t-shirts and mugs at Redbubble, and quite a lot of these ones are in my most recent cartoon collection, Random Life, published by Horacek Press. You can get that at the shops, and also in my website shop, https://horacek.com.au/category/cartoon-books. Hope you are well and that life is treating you fantastically, xx

Time flies so quickly it’s horrifying how speedily a new month rolls around but I always look forward to your cartoons and these are so funny and vibrant and colourful – the perfect antidote to grey wintry days! Thank you!

That is one thing about the Topic of the Month, it’s an excellent marker of how quickly time goes past. Whether that is a good thing to be reminded of is perhaps debatable. Nah, let’s say it’s a good thing, and yay to the TOTM. Glad you liked the cartoons – you can’t help but be colourful with such lovely animals!

Great colourful (sp?) or colour-full or full colour stuff for Day 1 Winter 2018, although some Easterners might laugh at the idea of ‘winter’ in WA …

Glad you liked them. Cold and heat are relative, and Western Australia is as entitled to complain about Winter as anyone.

Early, very early this morning I decided to make this a “No News” Day.
I cautiously opened my emails, saw your message Judy, and all manner of things became clear. You have gladdened my day beyond measure.
    Thank you again!
