Topic of the Month – July 2018

Posted on: June 28, 2018

This month’s Topic of the Month is ‘Aliens and Arachnids’.  Why these two things? No reason really. I like drawing aliens and I like drawing arachnids (well, spiders at least) and they are two things beginning with ‘a’. The first cartoon features them both, and was possibly my inspiration for the topic, but if you are looking for any deeper meaning, I don’t have one to tell you. Let me know if you find one.

Next month I’ll be serving up Beverages.

Every month this website will feature twenty or so Horacek cartoons on a chosen topic. I choose them alphabetically. All cartoons are ©Judy Horacek. I’d rather you didn’t use these cartoons without my permission, but if you must, I’d appreciate it if you acknowledge my authorship and the source.  They are cartoons, not memes! Cartoons this month were first published in the newspaper The Age, the Australian Magazine and the Canberra Times.

‘So tell us, what prompted you to set your novel on another planet?’

I *love* this, Judy. I want it on a poster for the office 😉

    Hi Judy,
Thanks for sharing these. Fairy Godmother, Spider Claus and life on other planets were the funniest. Terrifying Australian Things the most poignant.
    Cheers,
    Myron.

It would be great if Mondrian spiders really existed! x

I think the Mondrain one would make a great tea towel (if you’re still making them) … we’d then end hanging the works of two artists in the kitchen 🙂

Hi Lucy, No I’m not still making teatowels. Actually it wasn’t really me who made them, it was Alperstein Designs in conjunction with me (they did all the boring manufacture and distribution bits), but they aren’t making them any more – the market has fallen out of teatowels. Too many dishwashers I guess. Nice thought though. I have lots of my cartoons on the print on demand service Redbubble – https://www.redbubble.com/shop/horacek?ref=search_box . Mugs, t-shirts, posters, but they don’t offer teatowels. A bit of a shame – I quite liked being a feminist cartoonist making teatowels.

Love them all, as usual, but the last one especially gave me a chuckle and I have a soft spot for Santas. Thanks, Judy. The alarm I feel at the speed with which the months are hurtling by is mitigated by the pleasure of receiving your newsletter full of witty, thoughtful cartoons.
