Topic of the Month – August 2020

Posted on: August 1, 2020

This month I’m doing the topic of Triumph, the one that I’ve postponed for a couple of months. It’s Triumph, and when I first planned it a few months/lifetimes ago, the virus was first hitting, the tone just didn’t seem right – too overconfident, too boastful, maybe courting more trouble. But now, in Lockdown 2.0 in my home town of Melbourne, I’m seeing it as aspirational. After all it’s not as if the triumphs in my cartoons are huge – they are mostly small victories, the ones that allow us to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Like the first cartoon, the woman triumphantly swooping in with dinner for her family, her smile tied onto her face to cover the fact that she probably doesn’t feel like smiling. I just realised how topical this cartoon is – a mask!

In deference to this strange time, I took out the triumphant cartoon of a large group of women dancing. Because we can do that kind of thing at the moment. But we will all dance together again! Maybe Triumph for our times is maintaining the belief that everything will turn out okay, in the end. What’s that saying? – ‘it will all be okay in the end, and if it’s not okay yet, then it’s not the end’.

Every month this website will feature a dozen to twenty Horacek cartoons on a chosen topic. I choose the topics alphabetically. All cartoons are ©Judy Horacek. I’d rather you didn’t use these cartoons without my permission, but if you must, I’d appreciate it if you acknowledge my authorship and the source.  They are cartoons, not memes! But you’re very welcome to tweet the link to this page. Cartoons this month were first published in The Age and Overland, Women’s Power Handbook (by Joan Kirner and Moira Rayner), Mary Jane (by Sancia Robinson), Meanjin, the Australian Magazine, the Canberra Times and Sheilas (VWT). They have all been re-published in various Horacek cartoon collections.

Oh Nancy, thank you for this lovely message. Yes Melbourne is a bit hard at the moment, but we’re doing what needs to be done, and I have enough garden to grow things. And coming up with ways to get my work to people to try and make them smile is definitely helping me. thanks for the XOXOs, sending some back across the Tasman to you

Thanks Wendy (you know it’s not brand new work every month don’t you, that would be beyond me, it’s a repurposing, but I think valuable nonetheless – we do all need to laugh, now more than ever

Love your work. How you can make me smile with such sad truisms is magic. Probably with the juxtapositions with your clever drawing. Your women are never defeated. Thank you.
