Topic of the Month – August 2019

Posted on: July 30, 2019

This month’s topic is Leaping and Diving. Sometimes deliberate, sometimes accidental, sometimes sporty, sometimes metaphysical. Definitely more AFL cartoons than usual, but hey, apparently it’s that time of year.

Next month will be Mildred cartoons.

Every month this website will feature twenty or so Horacek cartoons on a chosen topic. I choose the topics alphabetically. All cartoons are ©Judy Horacek. I’d rather you didn’t use these cartoons without my permission, but if you must, I’d appreciate it if you acknowledge my authorship and the source.  They are cartoons, not memes! Cartoons this month were first published in The Age, The Canberra Times, Meanjin, the Australian’s Review of Books, Mary Jane: a guide to living with anorexia and bulimia by Sancia Robinson, the cover of the Walkley Journal, and as one of my very first postcards and in my first cartoon collection, Life on the Edge.

I kept this last month’s cartoons to look at again, and now they’ve reduced me to helpless giggles — all over again. Thanks a lot, Judy.

Hooray! I’ve re-subscribed successfully so I can return to enjoying a monthly tonic of your fab cartoons, thank you, Judy!
Some mystery glitsch meant I’ve missed them most of this year, when your insightful humour would have been most welcome.
The ‘snap’ one especially made me laugh, with slight self-judgement, as the misfortune of others is not usually funny, but the downfall (literally) of smugness is!
    Much appreciated!

Welcome back Foenix! Very glad you managed to re-subscribe and will see the cartoons in future, hopefully no more mystery glitches. As far as I know you are my only fan in Wales, so I’d hate to lose you! x

That was the cover of an issue of the Walkley Magazine, back in Julia Gillard’s day. I was pretty pleased with how it turned out.:)

I love all of these but think the AFL cartoons are especially inspired. Would it be OK if I use the two “supermen” cartoons in a post to CBCA WA Branch members encouraging them to attend our CBCA Book Week dinner on Friday 16 August. With appropriate acknowledgement, of course. They are particularly pertinent given that the theme this year is Reading is my secret power.

That would be fine Jan. Appropriate acknowledgement would be much appreciated. Good luck getting the members there, hope you have a good Book Week and night.

The mountain hiccup one is my fave, Judy – the giggles start just thinking of it! Is that Picasso’s Weeping Woman in the AFL =NGV one?

Do not try the mountain hiccup one for real! Yes, it was meant to be the Weeping Woman – I remember when it was stolen so it always seems like an iconic NGV piece to me.
