The kindness of strangers

Posted on: May 10, 2010

I don’t know if he or she is likely to read this, but thanks so much to the person who found the letter I must have dropped in the street, and posted it back to me. He or she didn’t provide any contact details, so this is the best I can do to try and say thanks.

The letter was a card to me from the fantastic Mem Fox, thanking me for the copy of Yellow is my favourite colour that I had sent as a gift to her brandnew grandson.  The words ‘divine’, ‘adorable’ and ‘you have surpassed yourself’ featured, so you can see it was obviously something I’d want to keep.  But then it disappeared, and I realised I had probably dropped it somewhere OUTSIDE, between my post office box and my studio, and that I might never see it again.

But this morning, a red envelope was sitting in my post office box.  My address and a Cate Blanchett stamp on the front, but no other details (I’m pretty sure it wasn’t from Cate).  Inside was the card from Mem, in the original envelope, with a little note ‘Just in case you accidentally discarded this’  Yes it was an accident and THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU wonderful stranger for posting it back to me!   That was a lovely thing for you to do.  Now not only do I have a warm glow from Mem’s card, and having it back in my hot little hands, but I also have a warm glow from the fact that this world contains people who are so kind.
