Where is the green flock?

November 30, 2010

The fabulously successful Instant Classic Where is the Green Sheep? by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek, has now been published in quite a few different forms in various places across the globe, and it was impossible to resist organising a Christmas photo shoot of them all.   It took quite a bit of time getting them all arranged  so beautifully … more »

Let there be music (and movement)!

November 30, 2010

Recently I did a picture for the cover of a cd of Benjamin Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchesta, a new release from ABC Classics.  The cd also contains Tubby the Tuba and Mother Goose, and the talents of Christopher Lawrence, Emma Ayres,  Marion Briggs and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.  For the television ad, … more »

Lincoln and his Feet

November 29, 2010

I just received this photo for the Brag book.  Fred and Jackie started off as fans of my cartoons and prints, and have now established a wonderful tradition of giving each new grandchild my picture books.

“Here is a photo (about 2 years old) of our grandson Lincoln with his copy of “These are my feet”. Loves books and Judy’s are … more »

Mem & Yellow

October 31, 2010

Here’s a very cute picture that Mem Fox sent me of her and her grandson reading my picture book ‘Yellow is my favourite colour’ together.  Apparently he really loves the book and they have read it over and over.  That’s a huge compliment as if anyone at all is going to be surrounded by lots and lots of wonderful picture … more »

A Green Sheep cake from New Zealand

October 31, 2010

It seems a bit coals to Newcastle, but Mem and my Where is the Green Sheep? is big in New Zealand too!  Big enough to warrant the honour of being a first birthday cake. This from Kate, with a picture of the cake in progress and of the wonderful final result.
“Here’s a Kiwi contribution to your brag book.  This is … more »

Is it me or is it Jennifer?

July 30, 2010

A while ago I did a series of simple cartoons about a character called Jennifer.  I’ve just put a piece of one up as my profile pic on my Facebook page,

Click on this piece of the cartoon to see the whole thing and some others from the series:

A Growl is Born

June 14, 2010

My name is Jordyn Boland and I am in Year 6 at St Brigid’s Primary School.  We were asked to do an art project on an illustrator and I chose Judy Horacek.  I also decided to make a soft toy of Growl at home. I have done a sketch book which includes my interpretation of Growl, along with the materials … more »

Elvis et al

May 25, 2010

Sometimes it is very strange being a cartoonist. For example, today I had to ask myself the question ‘If Elvis was a zeppelin, what colour would his shoes be?’

(The answer I gave myself was orange by the way.)

The kindness of strangers

May 10, 2010

I don’t know if he or she is likely to read this, but thanks so much to the person who found the letter I must have dropped in the street, and posted it back to me. He or she didn’t provide any contact details, so this is the best I can do to try and say thanks.

The letter was a … more »

The Growl Quilt

March 29, 2010

Following on from her wonderful Where is the Green Sheep? quilt, Merle Mitchell made this amazing quilt based on The Story of Growl for my niece Alice.

It’s a beautiful quilt, with lots of episode from the book represented. It probably took as long to make as the book did to draw!  It was much more complicated to make … more »

Baby Noor and the Red Sheep

March 29, 2010

Another beautiful cake inspired by ‘Where is the Green Sheep?’. This one comes all the way from London, and it’s the first one starring one of the other sheep in the book.

Dear Judy,

When trying to decide what sort of cake to make for my daughter’s first birthday, I thought that a sheep cake would be perfect. “Where is the … more »

Let there be dark!

March 25, 2010

There is now an anti-Earth hour event run by climate change deniers, and supported by parts of the Liberal Party (please note, this is in Australia, where ‘the Liberals’ are the opposite of ‘liberal’). It’s called ‘Human Achievement Hour’ demanding that everyone turn their lights ON at the exact same time as Earth Hour, Saturday 27 March 2010, between … more »

Best wishes

March 17, 2010

I often sign off emails with just ‘Best’, which I think sounds less formal than ‘Best Wishes’. But lately I keep mistyping the word, and it comes out as ‘Beset’. This felt like a Freudian slip, because I do feel beset by things at the moment – tasks, problems, existential dilemmas… But when I looked up the word … more »

Danger signs

March 11, 2010

Does it bother anyone else that the radioactive symbol is used as the icon on your computer to signify burning cds and dvds?  Shouldn’t that symbol only stand for Danger! ?

Warning Radioactive Material!  Beware! Don’t tamper with anything here! Get the hell out! Danger! Danger! Danger!

Radioactivity is a really really bad thing to come across.  So how come software producers … more »

Hold on!

March 4, 2010

This morning I saw on the side of a bus stop, a big ad for 600ml Coke in a NEW BOTTLE.  The new bottle has added grips – that is, small raised dots that supposedly make it easier to hold onto.  I can’t help but wonder what it is that people are doing while drinking Coke that mean they need … more »
